Immortality could be a curse rather than a gift

By Zara Waqas
(Pakistan News & Features Services)

Close your eyes for a while, give yourself a couple of minutes to think, if you had an ability or a supernatural power, that you are immortal, what would be your first thought? “This is great! I get to live my life without the fear of leaving anything behind” or maybe you would think “this is so bad! I won't live a normal life with the fear that I might die, or that I won't be able to leave my life for the afterlife”. This is your choice, because they are both pros and cons of being immortal.

What is immortality? Immortality is living forever. You cannot escape life. Neither, you can have access to the afterlife which you go to after death. If you ponder that, one day you wake up. You glance around in your surroundings, everything is exactly the same as yesterday, the day before yesterday, the year before, centuries pass, you see the same thing every day.

There is a fear that you might not find your purpose in life, or even better explained, how would you cure your boredom? The same life every single day for centuries. You would get bored of it wouldn't you? Passing by the woods for like the hundredth time, "I have seen these paths so much”.

There is another perspective, travel across the world, but for that you need to work all life to collect money. Your whole life, all your affirmations, all your dreams, all the things you want to accomplish, like travelling the world, trying new food every day, going to every restaurant in the world, making sure you don't miss anything and you keep on going through these lists, you keep working all your life, silently drowning in the growing expenses, grocery bills, electricity bills, medical bills, you are all alone with all the expenses because no one else is immortal around you, you are the only one with this curse that some will call a gift.

This is like a coin toss, yet the coin flips again and again for eternity, you get me? One moment, you're living your life, eating something new, getting a new car, a yacht, and you're happy. The next moment, you're drowning in a sea which is endless.

There are many sharks in this sea, you stretch your neck up, trying to shout for help. Your eyes dart around, no one is there, you're all alone, drowning in things no one else knows, no one else cares, no one wants to be with a freak who is immortal and cannot even die.

They think you will survive drowning, they don’t understand that this isn't just a sea, this is an endless sea, every time you drown, you give up, you revive and do something nice, then you drown again, trying to grasp the feelings of happiness, but you can't.

And you know that, you want this all to be over, you want to live a normal life. But you can't. This is irreversible, you are immortal and there is nothing out of this. It's endless, reversing, happening again and again. You're living the same life forever. And there is nothing you can do about it. You get older, a thousand, two thousand, new health problems, new issues, you try to live your life like you had planned on doing thousands of years ago. But now you cannot do anything but desiccate. Immortality is a curse. Not a gift. It should never be mistaken as a gift.

Governor Fahad Sikandar begins his tenure with a bang

Dr Beenish Khalid
(Pakistan News & Features Services)

Chaudhary Fahad Sikandar, District Governor 2027-2028, Rotary International District 3271, has begun his innings with a bang. He showed his intentions very clearly by arranging a fabulous meetup of President Nominees at the Karachi Gymkhana on June 5.

He was the pivot around which the whole ceremony revolved, although officially it was hosted by the Rotary Club of Shahrah-e-Faisal Karachi. The participation of nearly 100 Rotarians spoke volumes of his organizational skills.

Although the past as well as the current governors were accorded far too much recognition, exceeding the global Rotary protocols, the night belonged to Fahad Sikandar, who stole the limelight with his excellent presentation skills.

The President Nominees, who will be a part of Governor Fahad Sikandar's team, were thoroughly appreciative of the efforts of their versatile leader who is expected to bring about the much-needed change in Rotary affairs in Pakistan.

Digital edition of Rotary District Directory for 2027-28 unveiled

Dr Beenish Khalid
(Pakistan News & Features Services)

Chaudhary Fahad Sikandar, District Governor 2027-2028, Rotary International District 3271, has already created waves and the launch of the digital edition of the Rotary District Directory during the President Nominee Fellowship Meetup at Karachi Gymkhana on June 5 was declared as a pleasant surprise.

Very rightly, he was lavishly praised for the initiative on the occasion as the directory was unveiled in most spectacular of fashion in the presence of the cheering Rotarians.

As pointed out by the various dignitaries, present on the occasion, collecting and compiling data from the different clubs has always remained a challenging proposition even for the most resourceful of Rotary leaders but Fahad Sikandar proved the point that he indeed desires to let his work do the talking.

By bringing out the directory more than an year before the start of his tenure, he has provided adequate time to his team members to plan something big when they take charge their respective responsibilities on July 1, 2027.

A chapter is over with Pervez Iqbal’s death

By Syed Khalid Mahmood
(Pakistan News & Features Services)

Hundreds of his former colleagues, contemporaries from the different walks of life, close friends and family members gathered to bid farewell to Pervez Iqbal, hailed as one of the trailblazers in the advertising and marketing industry, who passed away on May 30. They attended the funeral prayers held later the same evening at the Sakeena Masjid and he was buried in the DHA Phase-VIII Graveyard in Karachi.

Senator Dr Sarmad Ali, President, All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS), and Managing Director, Jang Media Group, was particularly moved by the sad demise of Pervez Iqbal, whom he described as a highly respected professional, a gentleman of great warmth and integrity, who will be dearly missed.

Another large turnout was also witnessed during the dua for the departed soul, which was organized at his residence, located on the Zulfiqar Street in the DHA Phase-VIII on May 31. They condoled the death of Pervez with his brother, Shahid and Arshad, and son Asim.

Ever-smiling Pervez Iqbal is no more

By Syed Khalid Mahmood
(Pakistan News & Features Services)

The family sources have confirmed that Pervez Iqbal breathed his last on the morning of May 30. He had been laid low by a protracted illness for quite sometime but he was courageous and articulate enough to continue working professionally with his trademark smile, and enthusiasm, from the basement of his residence in the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) in Karachi.

Indeed, the advertising fraternity has lost one of its most committed professionals with his demise. Having worked at the famous Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI), he was the founding CEO of the Big Bang Communications Limited (BBCL), which had come into being in the 1990s.

He and his company rose to fame from a modest beginning with the ICC World Cup 1996 assignments as they proved their mettle by adding value to the mega cricket event, co-hosted by Pakistan. They built a big reputation as event managers, besides their growing engagement in the advertising and marketing arena.

The imposing structure of the BBCL House, located on Khyaban-e-Jami, was a testimonial of their resounding success in the 2000s but the steep decline in business during the later years saw them shrinking and the slide did not stop. Once operating from the multistoried building of their own, the BBCL had to relocate to a much smaller rented premises.

Being a great fighter, Pervez Iqbal tried his level best to keep his company afloat, primarily for the sake of his large team which he was reluctant to layoff, but his strenuous efforts could not yield the desired results. He worked for long hours which took its toll on his health. Although, he battled the ailments with a smile but the damage had been done.

He will be remembered for years to come for having played a significant role in shaping Pakistan’s advertising, marketing, and event management landscape. Under his leadership, the BBCL had successfully executed numerous large-scale campaigns, activations, and events for both national and international brands, setting benchmarks that many in the industry aspired to follow.

Recalling Aziz Memon’s historic meeting with Nelson Mandela

By Syed Khalid Mahmood
(Pakistan News & Features Services)

October 12, 1992 was a Red Letter Day in the history of Pakistan, as Nelson Mandela, one of the greatest-ever leaders of the world, touched down in Karachi for a brief visit.

He had been released from the Victor Verster Prison in Paarl, South Africa, on February 11, 1990, after serving 27 years as a political prisoner for opposing apartheid. He had spent exactly 18 years of his 27-year imprisonment on Robben Island.

His freedom had signalled the dismantling of the apartheid regime and culminated in him becoming the country's first Black president.

Aziz Memon, one of Pakistan’s most charismatic personalities, a proud recipient of Sitara-e-Imtiaz for his services in the social sector, fondly remembers the chance to meet the great Nelson Mandela on that evening of October 12, 1992 when the business community of Karachi arranged a party to greet the most popular South African leader.

Soon after their brief meeting, Nelson Mandela had quite generously invited Aziz Memon to visit him in South Africa which he did just a few months later.

Nelson Mandela has been revered the world over for his resilience and commitment to peace and reconciliation prevented a civil war, ultimately earning him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 and the presidency in 1994.

He had returned to Pakistan for a second, official state visit in May 1999, where he addressed a joint sitting of Parliament and publicly thanked the Pakistani people for their staunch international support during the darkest days of the anti-apartheid movement.

Remembering Nawabshah’s icon Hakim Muaz Pirzado on his 56th death anniversary

By Abdul Qadir Qureshi
(Pakistan News & Features Services)

The 56th death anniversary of Hakim Muhammad Muaz Pirzado, the inventor of the famous ‘Muaz Thadal’ of Nawabshah, was celebrated earlier this month. He was recognized as a distinguished physician, scholar, and social and political figure.

He was known to be a man of great character who, through his words, actions, and integrity, became a source of inspiration and guidance for society. He was considered as a role model, leading the community towards the path of progress.

Hailing from the intellectual tradition of Dar-ul-Irshad at Pir Jhanda, he was a student of the great scholar Maulana Ubaidullah Sindhi. He was originally named Muhammad Panah Pirzado, but at a later stage, he was renamed as Muhammad Muaz Pirzado by his teacher, who had made him a central figure in his circles.

He was born in 1896 in the village of Chhatan Shah near Qatal Shah in Sakrand Taluka, into the home of a hardworking man, Haji Muhammad Arif Pirzado. He received his early education from a local teacher, Akhund Walidad, and later graduated from Dar-ul-Irshad in Pir Jhanda, where he studied Persian, Arabic, and Sindhi under Maulana Ubaidullah Sindhi.

Following his teacher’s advice, he went to Lucknow to study traditional medicine (Tibb), where he earned a four-year degree. Later, he served as a teacher at the Tibbiya College in Delhi under the renowned physician Hakim Ajmal Khan.

He returned to Sindh and opened his clinic in Kharadar, Karachi, in 1917. He actively participated in the Khilafat Movement, which led to the closure of his clinic and his imprisonment for one year in 1921. After his release, he moved to Tando Adam and opened another clinic, which was also confiscated by the authorities. Eventually, he settled in Nawabshah, where he established his permanent residence and clinic, which became famous as ‘Muaz Dawakhana.’

Hakim Pirzado possessed a dynamic personality. Alongside his medical practice, he actively participated in political and social movements. In 1919, he joined Jamiat Ulema and played a significant role in the Khilafat Movement. He also contributed to the struggle for the separation of Sindh from Bombay.

He was a strong advocate of non-violence, inspired by the philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi, and actively promoted Hindu-Muslim unity. He was actively involved in Nawabshah’s local politics and social affairs. He contested municipal elections and won, serving as a member of Nawabshah Municipality for four consecutive terms.

When Jawaharlal Nehru visited Nawabshah, Hakim Muaz Pirzado, as a municipal member and district president of Congress, presented him with a welcome address. Being the son of a laborer, he strongly advocated for the rights of workers and farmers. After the partition, he joined the Sindh United Front due to his progressive ideas. He was imprisoned under the Safety Act in 1951.

After his release, he actively participated in the movements of Hyder Bakhsh Jatoi’s Hari Party and the National Awami Party. However, in the 1960s, he withdrew from politics and focused entirely on his medical practice.

Hakim Muaz Pirzado was a compassionate and generous person, who often treated poor patients free of cost and provided shelter, food, clothing, and education to orphaned and needy children. He also played a historic role in the establishment of the well-known madrasa ‘Tafheem-ul-Quran’ in Nawabshah in 1953.

He was not only a great religious scholar but also a highly skilled physician. He invented several herbal medicines, syrups, and remedies. Among his most famous creations was ‘Thadal’ later named ‘Muaz Thadal’ by his son Hakim Muhammad Munir Pirzado.

This drink created waves to be recognized as ‘Mashroob-e-Mehran’ and it became popular in different corners of the world. He also authored a book on medicine titled ‘Bayaz-e-Hikmat’ which was preserved in manuscript form with his descendants. He passed away on May 15, 1970. He is buried in Haji Naseer Graveyard in Nawabshah.

Governor Shakeel Kaimkhani praises Rotary Darakhshan’s services during official visit

By Dr Beenish Khalid
(Pakistan News & Features Services)

The Governor of Rotary International District 3271 (Pakistan), Shakeel Kaimkhani, appreciated the contributions from Rotary Club of Karachi Darakhshan (RCKD) over the years in boosting the image of the largest voluntary service organization of the world.

He made these observations during his official visit to the club on May 7 which culminated with a well-attended dinner-reception at the picturesque Karachi Club Annexe.

Earlier, he also participated in the board meeting of the club. Besides District Governor Shakeel Kaimkhani, the other Rotary dignitaries present on the occasion were Furqan Ali Sheikh (District Secretary), Shehla Dutta (Assistant Governor), Raza Tabish Farooqui (District Regional Coordinator), Chaudhary Fahad Sikander (District Governor 2027-28) and Abdul Jabbar Sheikh (District Governor 2027-28).

The District Governor described PDG Jahangir Moghul, who is also the Charter President of RCKD, as one of his mentors who remained a source of inspiration for him all along.

It was in the fitness of things that PDG Jahangir Moghul, one of the leading philanthropists having been affiliated with Rotary for the past 44 years on a trot, proposed the vote of thanks in the concluding ceremony.

It turned out to be yet another momentous day in the history of RCKD, who have made Rotary proud, since its charter in November 2004, with flurry of projects in line with the motto of Service Above Self.

“During our journey of 22 years, we have prided to have contributed to the cause of Rotary in many ways. We have continued doing lots of projects from time to time, which have duly been recognized and praised at the district level. We have worked proactively in all avenues of service and we have earned goodwill for Rotary with our deeds and projects,” Farzana Moghul, Secretary RCKD, observed in her report at the general body meeting.

“Education is one area where we have been contributing on a regular basis. We have supported quite a few educational institutions in different parts of the city to help them sustain and serve the cause of humanity. We have reached out to various schools in the less privileged areas and provided them help in cash and in kind. We have sponsored extracurricular activities for them to keep them healthy and hearty,” she recalled.

“We have been regularly supporting libraries by providing them books and equipments. Our club has helped establish new libraries at different schools. We have held polio camps to raise awareness about this deadly disease which we are trying to control and eliminate by means of vaccination,” the RCKD Secretary added.

“PDG Jahangir Moghul has remained our inspiration throughout our journey. He was elected as the District Governor for the Rotary 2015-16 and his tenure is still talked about with reverence. Under his able guidance, we have continued to deliver on all fronts to be recognized as one of the leading clubs of the district,"  the RCKD President, M Awais Moghul, remarked in his welcome address.

"Our membership strength may not be on the higher side at the moment but we are fortunate to be blessed with some outstanding Rotarians whose work speak for themselves and all of you are aware about them. We have worked with missionary zeal in the past and we will continue doing it for the sake of humanity,” he pledged.

Senator Sarmad Ali’s initiative; Hameed Haroon’s enthralling session enlivens APNS Talks

By Syed Khalid Mahmood
(Pakistan News & Features Services)

First thing first. The All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS), since their inception in 1953, has had a reputation of being an active entity. The latest initiative of inviting media icons for sharing their thoughts and experiences with fellow members, a brainchild of Senator Dr Sarmad Ali, their incredible President, seems to be another masterstroke.

The series of APNS Talks is here to stay. Hameed Haroon, the erstwhile Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Dawn Media Group, one of the largest media houses of the country, was the guest of honour on April 29.

It was a warm afternoon on a working day. Yet, the majority of seats, looking like more than 100 in number, were occupied in the meeting hall of Hotel Pearl Continental, Karachi, by the time the clock ticked 4 pm.

Senator Dr Sarmad Ali, President, APNS, and Managing Director, Jang Media Group, set the tone with a lively welcome address in which recalled his brief stint with Daily Star, a proud publication of the Dawn Group of Newspapers, owned by the Haroon family.

He spoke about the launch of the APNS Talks, a series aimed to enlighten the media fraternity by engaging them with the icons.

He disclosed that Mujeeb-ur-Rahman Shami, a veteran journalist, was invited to share his views and opinions during the inaugural edition of the APNS Talks which was held in Lahore. He described Hameed Haroon, alongwith Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman, as his mentors.

“I have known Hameed Haroon since debuting at Daily Star in Lahore way back in 1982. We have worked together at the APNS for a very long time. I have served as the APNS Secretary during quite a few tenures when he was our President. It has always been a privilege and honour, working with him,” Senator Dr Sarmad Ali acknowledged.

An impressive short documentary about the life of Hameed Haroon, produced by a couple of leading advertising agencies, was screened before inviting him for taking his position on the stage, alongwith journalist Mazhar Abbas, who was the moderator.

The audience was charmed by the versatility of Hameed Haroon and he was in complete command of the situation while narrating the tales, many of which were being heard for the first time.

As usual, he spoke his heart out on different burning issues but, more than once, chose to avoid sharing the full truth.

Light was shed on various aspects of Daily Star but he did not deem it proper to state clearly the reasons which had led to its abrupt closure, despite being one of the leading evening newspapers of the country. Neither did he like to reveal the full story that had ultimately led to en bloc resignation of the staffers of Herald in 1988.

Hameed Haroon was spot on in recollecting, however, that, despite their differences in opinion, he did not lose contact with the rebellion group of Herald which mobilized their resources to bring out a powerful newsmagazine by the name of Newsline.

He was in fact believed to have attended the launch ceremony of Newsline in 1989, although the magazine was brought out to compete directly with his group’s Herald.

A series of thematic sessions will be held to promote meaningful dialogue and knowledge-sharing at both national and international levels.

Key areas of discussion include socio-cultural cohesion and nation-building, systems of equity, access and justice, inclusive participation and institutional practices, inter-generational justice, and the re-imagining of DEI in Pakistan.

The conference will also address critical topics such as human rights, interfaith harmony, minority rights, and issues concerning gender minorities in the country.

On the sidelines of the event, the Greenwich University will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Vocational and Technical Training Commission (NAVTTC) to enhance collaboration in vocational training and capacity-building initiatives.

Greenwich University, ARY Digital join hands to revitalize media education

By Dr Beenish Khalid
(Pakistan News & Features Services)

Greenwich University and ARY Digital Network have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at fostering the growth of media education in Pakistan and strengthening collaboration between academia and the media industry.

The MoU was formally signed by the Vice Chancellor of Greenwich University, Dr Seema Mughal, and the President & CEO of ARY Digital Network and ARY Group, Salman Iqbal, in a ceremony held at the university campus in DHA, Karachi, on February 14.

Both the heads of their respective organizations spoke briefly on the occasion, before signing the MoU. They highlighted the growing significance of media and the need to keep pace with the changing times to prepare the students for meeting the challenges.

Under the agreement, both institutions have agreed to establish a groundbreaking academic–industry partnership to launch Pakistan’s first co-branded media studies institution.

The initiative is designed to set a new benchmark for media education in the country by integrating academic excellence with real-world industry exposure. As part of the collaboration, the two organizations will establish the ARY School of Media Studies, a dedicated academic school to be housed within the premises of Greenwich University.

The school will offer undergraduate and graduate programs developed through joint collaboration, ensuring that curricula remain aligned with evolving industry standards and practices. One of the key highlights of the MoU is the introduction of an exclusive, high-value internship programme designed and executed by ARY Digital Network.

The programme will provide enrolled students with hands-on training opportunities for three consecutive summer terms. Each year, a minimum of 15 students will be selected to participate in the internship, enabling them to gain practical experience within one of Pakistan’s leading media networks.

The agreement also ensures academic autonomy, as Greenwich University retains the right to collaborate with other media organizations for initiatives outside the direct scope of the ARY School of Media Studies. In order to ensure effective implementation, a joint coordination committee will be formed. The committee will oversee planning, execution, and evaluation of all activities outlined in the MoU, ensuring the partnership achieves its intended goals.

This strategic collaboration marks a significant step toward bridging the gap between media education and industry practice in Pakistan, offering students enhanced opportunities for professional development and career advancement.

Ahmed Chinoy welcomes export incentives, industrial cost relief measures

By Abdul Qadir Qureshi
(Pakistan News & Features Services)

Ahmed Chinoy, Chairman, Pakistan Cloth Merchants Association (PCMA), has welcomed the Prime Minister’s announcement of major relief measures for exporters and the industrial sector, terming them a timely and positive step towards strengthening the country’s export competitiveness and industrial growth.

He appreciated the government’s decision to reduce the Export Refinance Scheme (ERS) rate by 300 basis points to 4.5% from 7.5%, stating that the move will significantly ease working capital constraints for exporters and improve their ability to compete in international markets.

He also lauded the reduction of approximately PKR 4 per kWh in industrial electricity tariffs, along with a PKR 4.04 per unit cut in wheeling charges, noting that lower energy costs will provide much-needed relief to industries facing high input costs.

“These measures send a strong pro-export and pro-industry signal. Reduced financing costs combined with lower energy tariffs will improve liquidity, reduce operational pressures, and enhance competitiveness across key sectors, particularly textiles and other energy-intensive industries,” Ahmed Chinoy observed.

The PCMA Chairman further noted that the relief package was expected to support export growth, improve debt-servicing capacity for exporters, and contribute to more stable and sustainable industrial activity. While welcoming the announcement, he emphasized the importance of timely and transparent implementation guidelines to ensure that the benefits reach businesses efficiently and without delay.

“The PCMA looks forward to continued engagement with the government to further strengthen the textile value chain and support sustainable export-led growth,” Ahmed Chinoy concluded.
