The World Tourism Day is celebrated around the world in every country and city interested in harnessing the power of tourism for growth, development and cultural identity on September 27.

The main role of the World Tourism Day is to highlight the global significance of tourism as a tool for global development and cultural enlightenment.

Tourism is regarded as the greatest educator in the world. Tourism has been performing a pivotal role in promoting cultural knowledge and awareness, offering the necessary tools and public opinion support in protecting world heritage.

This is one of the goals of the World Tourism Day celebrations that are being conducted throughout the world. It is a unique opportunity to raise awareness on tourism’s actual and potential contribution to sustainable development.

The WTD official celebration will be held in Budapest, Hungary, a country enjoying steady growth of tourism backed by consistent policy support and a commitment to the digital future. Other celebrations will take place worldwide.

The official celebration will also see the announcement of the semi-finalists of the 1st UNWTO Tourism Startup Competition, launched by UNWTO and Globalia to give visibility to startups with innovative ideas capable of revolutionizing the way we travel and enjoy tourism.

Hungary, a modern European country steeped in history, had welcomed almost 16 million international tourist arrivals in 2017, 50% more than in 2010, demonstrating the steady growth of tourism in the country backed by consistent policy support.

The importance of digital technologies in tourism, providing opportunities for innovation and preparing the sector for the future of work, will be at the centre of World Tourism Day 2018, to be celebrated in Budapest on September 27.
